A report in the Italian media considers the Champions League draw against Real Sociedad as one of the worst Inter Milan displays under Simone Inzaghi.

The 47-year-old led the Italian giants towards the final in last season’s edition of Europe’s elite club competition. However, his new European campaign started on an underwhelming note.

On the first matchday of the Champions League group stage, the Nerazzurri settled for a 1-1 draw at the San Sebastian Stadium.

But aside from the result, a report from Il Corriere dello Sport (via FcInter1908) dubs the performance as one of the worst during Inzaghi’s tenure at the club.

Sociedad had the upper hand from the get-go. They took the deal through Brais Mendez as early as the fourth minute. They kept pressing for more goals, but Yann Sommer’s heroics kept Inter in the match.

Eventually, the Nerazzurri showed up in the last 10 minutes. The Italians took the initiative and snatched an equalizer through Lautaro Martinez.

The source wonders if Inzaghi felt a sense of relaxation amongst his ranks who won the Derby della Madonnina 5-1. This could explain his decision to install a heavy rotation in the starting lineup.

But if that’s the case, the trick didn’t pay off, as the Nerazzurri were second best for the largest part of the match.

Nevertheless, the report hails Inter for displaying the character of a true champion. They managed to come away with a decent result from a tough stadium despite failing to deliver their best football.
