Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez was the player who acted as a bridge from the dressing room in the summer soap opera between the Nerazzurri Romelu Lukaku.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
The situation with striker Lukaku in the summer had a big impact on everyone associated with Inter.
The club directors were profoundly angry with the Belgian over his antics.
And the Inter fanbase certainly did not react positively. There is a deep sense of betrayal among the Nerazzurri supporters, who feel that Lukaku deceived and let the club and the team down.
And from the Inter dressing room as well, there is a real sense of frustration.
Whilst things may not have been perfect with Lukaku’s situation at Inter last summer, no one quite expected the summer to go in the way that it did.
And according to the Gazzetta, Martinez was the player whose responsibility it was to try and gain some clarity.
Role Of Lautaro Martinez In Romelu Lukaku Summer Soap Opera
There had been several reports during the summer of Lukaku refusing to answer phone calls.
The 30-year-old went “off the radar” as Inter sought answers in their attempts to sign him from Chelsea.
From the club’s perspective, this caused outrage.
And in the dressing room, the mood was one of confusion.
Therefore, the other players wanted to know what was going on with Lukaku.
And according to the Gazzetta, Martinez was the player who took the lead in trying to contact Lukaku.
The two strikers had a personal friendship off of the pitch, not just on it.
So there was certainly a channel of communication between them.
And therefore, it was when Martinez was not able to get a hold of the Belgian that the rest of the dressing room started to get the sense that there were major problems.
