Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez could become the highest paid player in Serie A if he signs a contract extension this fall.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

At the moment, the highest paid player in Serie A is Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

The Serb’s teammate, Polish former Roma and Arsenal goalkeeper Wojcech Szczesny, is just behind him.

Then, Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is next in the list. Following the Turk are Juventus defender Alex Sandro, and then Martinez.

The Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri are the two teams in Serie A with the highest wage bills.

And at the moment, Martinez’s earnings are among the highest in Serie A – but not necessarily fully reflective of his stature within this Inter team. Or of the fact that he has become one of the Italian top flight’s most decisive players.

Martinez is currently blazing a trail in the Serie A scoring charts. He has already scored ten league goals after just eight matches.

Inter Could Make Lautaro Martinez Highest Paid Player In Serie A

At the moment, Martinez’s contract with Inter runs out at the end of June 2026.

Therefore, it is not exactly a massive hurry to agree a new deal – but Inter are certainly keen to do so in due time.

The talks will likely take place during the fall.

The fact that Martinez has become Inter’s captain this season, in addition to his contributions on the pitch, mean that Inter want to tie the Argentine down on a new long-term deal.

And Martinez would certainly be in for a pay raise to reflect his status.

At the moment, Calhanoglu is Inter’s highest-paid player.

The Turkish international signed a new deal during the summer, until the end of June 2027.

Calhanoglu earns just over €6 million net per season. That has been, for some time, the upper limit of the Nerazzurri’s wage structure.

Therefore it is no coincidence that the former AC Milan midfielder is now earning that much.

But for Martinez, Inter would be willing to go some way beyond that existing wage structure, the Gazzetta report.

Therefore, the newspaper, the 26-year-old will overtake not just his teammate Calhanoglu, but also the Juventus players who lead the way in terms of Serie A’s top earners.

Martinez should in all likelihood become Serie A’s top earner.
