Simone Inzaghi believes that midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan would be capable of playing as a second striker for Inter Milan.
The coach spoke to InterTV after the Nerazzurri’s win over Torino in Serie A this evening, via FCInterNews.
Before joining Inter, Mkhitaryan had played in a variety of positions during his career.
Over more than a decade, the Armenian international had largely played in attacking roles. For the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, and Arsenal, he largely utilized his talents in the final third.
However, there was already a real strain of versatility in Mkhitaryan’s game.
He proved himself capable of playing as a winger on either side, in attacking midfield, or right off the striker.
It was at Roma that Mkhitaryan really started to move deeper and deeper on the pitch.
And when Inter signed the veteran from the Giallorossi, that is the position they got him to play. Mkhitaryan has largely played on the left side of the Nerazzurri’s midfield trio.
However, it looks as though the 34-year-old could be needed elsewhere.
A lengthy spell on the sidelines for striker Marko Arnautovic has left Inter looking a bit shorthanded in attack.
Reports have suggested that Mkhitaryan could fill in as a second striker. And Nerazzurri coach Inzaghi has confirmed that that is a position that he sees the Armenian as capable of playing.
Inzaghi Confirms Mkhitaryan Could Play As Second Striker For Inter
As far as whether he believes Mkhitaryan can play in attack, Inzaghi confirmed that “That’s a solution that I can try implementing at the moment, given that we’re very light up front.”
“I’ll evaluate it from match to match,” the coach added.
Of the victory over Torino, Inzaghi said that “It’s not easy against Torino right after the international break.”
“We had some absences,” he continued. “But I’m very happy with how the guy reacted, they did well.”
And of the importance of substitutions, Inzaghi said that “I’m lucky enough that I have them at my disposal.”
“In recent seasons they’ve been an added value for us. Rotation is important, and it will be from now until the end of the season.”
