Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is behind only Stuttgart’s free-scoring Serhou Guirassy for goals in Europe’s top five leagues.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight just how impressive the 26-year-old’s goalscoring start to the campaign has been in a European context.

In Serie A, Inter striker Martinez has no real rivals in front of goal at the moment.

The Argentine has managed to find the back of the net an eye-watering eleven times in just nine matches.

Last season’s top scorer Victor Osimhen is the closest in Martinez’s wake. But the Nigerian would need to score five goals to catch up – he’s managed to get on the scoresheet six times in nine matches.

Eslewhere in Europe, as well, Martinez’s league goals put him out in front of nearly everyone else.

The usual suspects aren’t too far behind the Inter captain. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has scored nine goals in nine matches. Bayern Munich’s big summer signing Harry Kane has scored the same number in eight.

But Martinez’s start bests both.

Elsewhere there have been other fairly predictable candidates to be European football’s top scorer of league goals.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has scored eight goals so far. Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski has found the back of the net five times, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah seven.

But then there have also been the surprise packages.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has scored eight goals.

The Englishman has been one of European football’s stories of the season after his summer switch to the Spanish capital from Borussia Dortmund. But he’s still three behind Inter captain Martinez.

But it’s been an even bigger surprise package who’s overtaken Martinez.

Stuttgart striker Guirassy has scored a truly remarkable fourteen goals in eight matches.

This is three ahead of what even Martinez has scored.
