Beppe Marotta has clarified that striker Gianluca Scamacca didn’t turn down Inter Milan in the summer, and denied approaches for Piotr ZIelinski.
The Nerazzurri CEO spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN ahead of this evening’s Serie A match against Atalanta, via FCInterNews.
A couple of transfer stories have recently made the rounds regarding Inter, despite the window being closed.
One concerns Atalanta striker Scamacca.
The 24-year-old Italian international joined La Dea from West Ham United during the summer transfer window.
However, the Bergamo-based club were certainly not the only club with an interest in signing Scamacca. Reports suggest that Inter also made their attempt.
And now, with the two teams facing off, there has been some speculation about the summer transfer saga involving the young striker.
And then there have also been some recent rumours of Inter making an attempt to sign Piotr Zielinski next summer.
The Napoli midfielder could be available on a free transfer if he doesn’t sign a new contract with the Partenopei.
Marotta Denies Scamacca Rejected Inter, Zielinski Links
Of the transfer saga with Scamacca during the summer, Marotta claimed that “We considered a lot of different profiles in order to get four players in attack.”
“We backed out of the deal [for Scamacca] because the conditions were no longer there,” he said.
“It’s not exactly true that he rejected Inter,” the Nerazzurri CEO claimed. “Because when he decided to start talks with Atalanta, we felt that it was time to end the negotiations.”
“He made a very respectable choice,” Marotta added. “And we moved on to other targets.”
As far as the Zielinski links, the Inter CEO suggested that they are nothing more than paper talk.
“When we talk about free agents as good as him, their names are always linked with clubs like ours,” Marotta said.
“But for now there’s been no approach,” he continued.
Marotta made clear that “Ausilio and Baccin are always monitoring the market.”
“We’ll see which opportunities come up,” he added. “But the fact that there are players like him available on a free transfer only plays into the hands of journalists.”
“It will be up to him to decide with Napoli.”
And Marotta also gave his thoughts on rumours that Inter captain Lautaro Martinez turned down an offer from Spanish giants Real Madrid during the summer transfer window.
“He is a serious young man,” the Inter CEO said of Martinez.
“He understood that Inter can give him the certainty of professional growth.”
“Now he’s also captain,” Marotta noted. “Being captain of a team like Inter is a source of pride.”
“We hope he can stay for a long time. You can never predict the future, but he has made his wishes very clear.”
