Lautaro Martinez feels that whether or not he finds the back of the net, he always wants to do everything to help Inter Milan.
The Nerazzurri captain spoke to InterTV after the team’s Champions League win away to Red Bull Salzburg, via FCInterNews.
For Inter, it’s job done.
The Nerazzurri have secured their spot in the Champions League knockout rounds for the third season in a row.
And they have done so with two matches to spare.
Undoubtedly, the team deserve their place in the round of sixteen. But at the same time, it has certainly not been as easy as it might seem.
In the first match of this season’s group stage, Inter snatched a draw away to Real Sociedad, but only after enduring one of their toughest matches of the campaign so far.
And then wins over Benfica and twice against Red Bull Salzburg were hard-fought.
That was certainly the case this evening.
Playing away from home, Inter had to suffer and fight, leaving it late to finally find the winner.
It was captain Martinez who scored the crucial goal. The 26-year-old came off the bench and scored from the penalty spot.
Lautaro Martinez: Always Try To Help Inter, Whether Or Not I Score
Asked whether it’s a coincidence that the majority of his Champions League goals have been away from home, Martinez replied “It’s definitely a coincidence.”
“The important thing is to score to give the team a boost,” he said.
“And when I can’t score I always try to help the team.”
“I’m happy because the guys had an excellent first half,” Martinez said. “And also an excellent second half, in which we caused problems for them and won the match.”
Martinez noted that “Even in the defensive phase we did an excellent job.”
“These matches are defined by the details,” the Argentine added. “And we did well to score a penalty, win, and go through.”
