Inter Milan’s squad has received a bonus of €2 million from the club after reaching the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter can breathe a little easier after beating Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday evening.

Three points from that match mean that the Nerazzurri have now mathematically guaranteed themselves a place in the knockout stage of Europe’s top club competition.

Qualifying for the round of sixteen with two group stage matches to spare is certainly a feat for Inter.

It means that the Nerazzurri have now done so in each of the past three seasons.

Simone Inzaghi has guided the team to this stage in each of his three seasons at the helm. Neither Luciano Spalletti nor Antonio Conte had done so even once.

Inter Milan Reward Squad With €2M Champions League Bonus

Naturally, the coach deserves plenty of credit for this achievement. But so, of course, do the squad.

Virtually the entire Nerazzurri squad chipped in to get the team into the round of sixteen.

Inzaghi frequently put out a rotated team across the four group stage matches that Inter have taken ten points from to secure their spot in the next round.

Players like Carlos Augusto, Alexis Sanchez, and Davide Frattesi have starred throughout the group stage.

And young German defender Yann Bisseck made his first ever start against Salzburg on Wednesday.

Therefore, Inter are rewarding the entire squad with a bonus totalling around €2 million, reports the Gazzetta.

This is only fair considering the big financial boost that reaching the knockouts comes as.

The Nerazzurri consider the revenues from participating in the group stage the bare minimum. But the knockouts are certainly never to be taken for granted.

And in addition to the revenues from the Champions League itself, there is also the fact that Inter officially booked their place in the upcoming Club World Cup with Wednesday’s win over Salzburg.

That is worth an additional €50 million in revenues to the club.
