Inter Milan are close to handing a contract extension to versatile former Man United and Torino defender Matteo Darmian.
This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews. The outlet anticipate that the Nerazzurri won’t wait for an option to extend the 33-year-old’s deal kicks in, and will offer a new contract with the option of another season.
At the moment, Darmian’s contract with Inter expires at the end of next June.
The Italian international signed a one-year extension last season.
But Darmian’s current contract contains the option of another season, until the end of June 2025. That option is on the part of the club, and will kick in when Darmian makes a certain number of appearances.
One way or the other, it looks virtually a foregone conclusion that Darmian will make the requisite number of appearances.
The 33-year-old has been a regular in the team this season, both from the start and from the bench.
Darmian has played at right-wingback and on the right side of the defense.
And with Benjamin Pavard out with a knee injury for a few more weeks, Darmian is currently first-choice in defense.
Inter Close To Extending Contract Of Matteo Darmian
According to FCIN, though, Inter aren’t going to wait until the option to extend Darmian’s deal kicks in.
The Italian remains a vital part of the squad.
Darmian’s versatility and consistency have been major assets for Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi.
Therefore, Inter do not want to waste any time in extending the defender’s deal.
According to FCIN, the club are preparing an offer of a new contract.
This would see Darmian stay at the club until the end of June 2025. And then there would also be an option for a further season, until the end of June 2026.
This season has only reinforced Darmian’s importance to the squad.
Even well into his thirties, the former Manchester United defender is far more than just a backup.
So Inter are happy to keep Darmian for at least one more season after this one. And are also preparing for the possibility of having the defender around until the season when he turns 36.
