Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni has suffered an injury to his right calf whilst on international duty with Italy.

Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia updated on the injury suffered by the 24-year-old in a tweet.

Bastoni is currently part of Luciano Spalletti’s Italian national team squad.

The 24-year-old is one of six Inter players who have received Azzurri call-ups during this break.

Fellow defenders Francesco Acerbi and Matteo Darmian are also in the squad. As are wingback Federico Dimarco and midfielders Nicolo Barella and Davide Frattesi.

Bastoni has become a regular starter for Italy.

The retirement of longtime stalwart Giorgio Chiellini from international duty and the phasing out of Leonardo Bonucci has meant that there has been a big role for Bastoni.

Whilst the 24-year-old largely plays on the left of a back three for Inter, for his national side he has more played in a central pairing as part of a back four.

Inter Defender Alessandro Bastoni Suffers Calf Strain With Italy

Bastoni has just been training with the rest of the Azzurri squad at the start of the break.

But there is bad news for Italy, and potentially also for Inter.

Sky report that the Nerazzurri defender has picked up a strain to his right calf in training.

The broadcaster does not reveal, however, the extent of Bastoni’s injury.

Nor do they report on what the potential timeline for a recovery would be at this stage.

Italy face two massive EURO 2024 qualifiers during the international break.

The Azzurri come up against North Macedonia and then Ukraine.

Given that Italy are three points behind Ukraine but with a game in hand, these matches are virtually must-win.

Meanwhile, Inter face one of the most significant matches of their season upon returning from the break.

The Nerazzurri are head-to-head against Juventus in a Derby d’Italia match in their first match back.

Moreover, that match will pit first against second in the Serie A table. Therefore, it has the air of a potential title-decider.

As such, Bastoni’s fitness will be something that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is following just as anxiously as Spalletti is.
