Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij, and Matteo Darmian will make up the Inter Milan back three against Juventus tomorrow evening.
Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, identify the trio as virtually “picking itself” for the top-of-the-table Serie A clash.
It is not as though there is any lack of competition or depth in Inter’s defensive options.
But at the moment, a couple of key injuries have robbed Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi of any real decisions to make.
Former Bayern Munich man Benjamin Pavard is out with a knee injury. The 27-year-old is getting closer and closer to a return, but that is still weeks away.
Meanwhile, Alessandro Bastoni is also out.
The 24-year-old picked up a calf problem during the international break. He suffered the injury in training with Italy, and it meant that Bastoni played no part in the Azzurri’s EURO 2024 qualifiers during the break.
There had initially been some hope of getting Bastoni back for tomorrow’s match.
But there is simply no chance of it. The Italian international is not ready, and Inter certainly wouldn’t risk him.
Acerbi, De Vrij & Darmian To Start For Inter Vs Juventus
The injuries to Pavard and Bastoni will mean that Inzaghi goes with experience tomorrow.
Filling in for Bastoni will be Acerbi. The 35-year-old will move over to the left side of the back three, where he has often played for Inter.
That will mean a starting spot in the centre of defense for another experienced former Lazio defender, Dutch international de Vrij.
And on the right, Darmian will start.
The ex-Manchester United man has frequently started in defense since last season.
Darmian played in place of Milan Skriniar through the second half of last campaign.
And this time around it is Pavard who the 33-year-old is backing up. And he will certainly do so tomorrow against Juventus as the Frenchman continues to be out.
