Matteo Darmian is happy with how Inter Milan wrapped up their Champions League group stage despite failing to score against Real Sociedad.
The 34-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, after the goalless draw.
Inter were not able to secure top spot in their Champions League group.
The Nerazzurri had already booked their place in the knockout rounds with a couple matches to spare. But this evening, they needed a win if they were to finish top spot.
In the end, Real Sociedad were able to hold out for a point. That means that the La Liga side will finish top of the group rather than Inter.
Inter did even have some good chances to score. But in the end they were not able to finish any of them.
Some disappointment is only natural.
Inter will now almost certainly face a tougher draw in the next round.
And the Nerazzurri have now failed to beat La Real in two attempts.
But at the same time, against a team who have proven that they can go toe-to-toe with anyone in Europe, Inter dug in their heels and played out a gritty and organized match.
Matteo Darmian Reacts To Champions League Draw Vs Real Sociedad
“We knew from the start not only of this match, but the start of the group as a whole, that Real Sociedad are a tough team to come up against,” Darmian said after the match.
“They have a lot of quality, they’re great in possession.”
“And tonight we weren’t able to find the goal that would have allowed us to top the group.”
“But honestly we’ve had a good start to the season,” the Italian international stressed.
“And now we’re looking forward in a positive way,” he added. “We’re awaiting the round of sixteen draw.”
Darmian noted that “We wanted to finish top of the group.”
“Now we’ll see who we have to face in the next round. But I think that whoever it ends up being, they won’t be happy about having to face Inter.”
“There’s still some time to go between now and February,” the former Manchester United defender observed. “But we’ll try to stay on the path we’ve been on.”
