Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez needs one more goal to equal the tally of Giuseppe Meazza in one calendar year.

The 26-year-old is enjoying a sensational campaign. Yesterday, he led his side towards victory over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

He pounced on Adam Marusic’s blunder to break the deadlock for the Nerazzurri who secured a vital 2-0 win and thus extended their lead on top of the Serie A table to four points.

This goal is the Argentine’s 15th of the Serie A campaign and 29th league strike in 2023.

Therefore, Lautaro has now surpassed the tally of former Inter strikers Christian Vieri and Diego Milito who both scored 28 goals in one calendar year.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (via FcInterNews) highlights, Martinez is now one goal away from equaling the tally of the iconic Meazza.

The legendary Italian striker was the club’s talisman in the 1930s. He once managed to score 30 goals in a year.

Lautaro still has two matches left to catch up with Meazza or even surpass him. The Nerazzurri host Lecce next weekend before taking on Genoa away from home in their last fixture of 2023.

Inter Milan Captain Lautaro Martinez Closing In On The Yearly Tally Of Giuseppe Meazza

But even if Martinez manages to equal Meazza’s tally, he’d still have another two Inter legends to catch.

The first is his Argentine compatriot Antonio Valentin Angelillo who scored 31 goals in a single year during his stint with the Nerazzurri between 1957 and 1961.

Nevertheless, the ultimate record holder remains Istvan Nyers who netted 32 goals in a calendar year. The Hungarian icon donned the Black-and-Blue stripes between 1948 and 1954.
