Simone Inzaghi is expecting Inter Milan to sign a right-wingback during the January transfer window, though a striker could also arrive.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

In less than two weeks, Inter will have the chance to intervene in the transfer market to strengthen their squad for the run-in of the season.

And there would appear to be one area of the team where the need for a new signing is greatest.

The right flank has looked to be something of a problem position for Inter this season.

There are three players capable of playing at right-wingback – Denzel Dumfries, Juan Cuadrado, and Matteo Darmian.

But Dumfries has been out for a couple weeks with an injury. In truth, the Dutchman has been dealing with some fitness issues all season.

But Dumfries’s issues are trivial compared to those of Juan Cuadrado.

The former Juventus wingback has been dealing with tendon problems virtually since he joined Inter. And Cuadrado will now have to undergo surgery – that means he’ll miss a few months of action.

Darmian, on the other hand, has proven more physically robust than Dumfries or Cuadrado.

But the 34-year-old former Manchester United and Torino veteran is also an important player in defense, where he can play on the right of the back three – Darmian can hardly be in two places at once.

Inzaghi Expects Inter To Sign A Right-Wingback In January

According to the Corriere, Inter coach Inzaghi has no doubts about what he considers to be the priority.

The Nerazzurri coach wants a player who can add additional depth and quality on the right flank.

The fact that Cuadrado will be missing for a big chunk of the season to come means that the coach is finding his options thin on the ground at right-wingback.

The wingback positions are key to how Inter play under Inzaghi.

In defense and particularly in attack, the Nerazzurri use the width extensively. And Inzaghi demands a particular profile of player in the wingback roles.

Pace, and above all stamina, are key in a role that is very physically demanding.

Inzaghi also wants a good slate of options since he typically opts to substitute the wingbacks during the second half in order to add fresh legs to the team.

The Corriere confirm that Club Brugge’s Tajon Buchanan is the player who Inter and Inzaghi want to sign next month.

The 24-year-old Canadian international would give Inter the kind of profile Inzaghi wants.

It is also possible that Inter would sign a striker next month. The subpar performances of Marko Arnautovic and Alexis Sanchez to date have moved the club to consider an attacking reinforcement.

But the Nerazzurri will likely make their assessments in this respect after the Supercoppa italiana.

The club could wait to see what sorts of opportunities arise.

On the right, by contrast, Inter won’t wait. Inzaghi wants the club to bring in a player as soon as possible.
