Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team could have done a better job protecting the lead against Genoa.

Speaking in a press conference, as reported by FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri coach reacted to the 1-1 Serie A draw.

As had been the case when they had dropped points against the likes of Bologna and Sassuolo earlier this season, Inter actually went ahead in the first half of this evening’s match in Liguria.

It was striker Marko Arnautovic who broke the deadlock. The Austrian scored his first ever Serie A goal in an Inter shirt.

But it was just ten minutes later that Inter conceded the equalizer.

Genoa defender Radu Dragusin headed home from a corner to send the two teams in at halftime level.

Then in the second half, neither team were able to find a winner. The Nerazzurri and the Grifone shared the points in the end.

Inzaghi: Inter Needed To Protect Lead Better Vs Genoa

“We are not happy with the draw,” Inzaghi said after the match at the Marassi.

“We wanted to win,” he continued. “But we knew the kind of team we were coming up against.”

“Physically and mentally in great form, and putting a lot of intensity on the pitch.”

“After having gone ahead, we just had a minute left in the first half,” Inzaghi noted. “We needed to do better when they scored.”

“Credit to Genoa, though,” the coach made clear. “They deserved the result based on what they showed on the pitch.”

And as far as why Yann Bisseck started ahead of Benjamin Pavard in defense, Inzaghi said that “Pavard had a complicated injury. But he’s been working well in training for the past 7-8 days, so it was a technical decision.”

“He’d already been available to start against Lecce,” the coach said of the Frenchman. “But I made my decision.”

“We were up against a very physically intense team. We knew that particularly here at the Marassi, this season they’ve only lost against Fiorentina and Milan, and they’ve played in a fearless way and caused everyone problems.”

“Once we went ahead we should have protected the lead better,” Inzaghi lamented.

He added that “In the second half we had a chance to go ahead again. But the keeper did well on Acerbi.”

“Then we also conceded a couple counters that we shouldn’t have.”
