Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is chasing a number of goalscoring records this season, including of Gonzalo Higuain and Ciro Immobile.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
26-year-old Argentine international Martinez is currently on twenty goals in all competitions for Inter this season.
The Nerazzurri captain has scored eighteen in Serie A. And then an additional two in the Champions League.
That means that Martinez has scored a total of 122 goals for Inter in total.
That is good enough to see the Argentine become the tenth-highest goalscorer in the club’s history.
And it shouldn’t be long before Martinez rises even higher in the rankings.
Christian Vieri is ninth in the rankings, and Mauro Icardi eighth. They have scored 123 and 124 goals respectively.
Therefore, if Martinez scores three more goals this season, he will rise to seventh place. Barring an extraordinary goal drought or major injury, it would seem all but a foregone conclusion that he will.
And then in seventh is the legendary Istvan Nyers. The Hungarian found the back of the net 133 times for Inter.
To reach that total, Martinez will need 31 goals across all competitions. That is the same number that Diego Milito scored during the 2009-10 season.
So if Martinez can equal Milito’s record from the Treble-winning season, he will catch up to Nyers. Surpass it with 32 or more, and Martinez will move into sixth spot.
That is a more ambitious benchmark than surpassing Vieri and Icardi.
But Inter’s captain is on track.
Not Just Nyers – Lautaro Martinez Also Chasing Higuain & Immobile
Martinez is not just hunting for records at Inter, though.
The Nerazzurri captain is also looking towards league record.
Currently, the record for most goals scored in a single Serie A season belongs jointly to Gonzalo Higuin and Ciro Immobile.
The Argentine found the back of the net 36 times for Napoli in the 2015-16 campaign. And the Italian equalled that in the 2019-20 season.
Equalling or surpassing that record would be a tougher ask for Martinez than catching up to Nyers.
Especially since Champions League goals would not be relevant.
But it is not outside the realm of possibility by any means.
Martinez missed a couple of Serie A matches at the end of December. This certainly hindered the Argentine’s chances of catching up to Higuain and Immobile.
But on his return, the Inter captain has scored once against Hellas Verona, and twice against Monza.
This takes Martinez to eighteen goals from twenty matches.
That’s not quite on pace to reach 36 at the end of the season.
But if Martinez can stay fit and in form in front of goal, he could well back himself to score at an even higher rate in the coming months in Serie A.
