Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella expressed his thrill after helping his side beat Lazio in the semi-final of the Italian Super Cup.

The Nerazzurri dominated the proceedings at the Al-Awwal Stadium from start to finish. Maurizio Sarri’s men never stood a chance and failed to threaten Yann Sommer’s goal throughout the match.

On the contrary, the Serie A leaders ran the show, with Marcus Thuram breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute.

Simone Inzaghi’s men wasted a flurry of chances in the first half, but then doubled their lead early in the second period through a Hakan Calhanoglu spot kick.

Davide Frattesi came off the bench to make it three, placing the final nail in Lazio’s coffin.

Although he wasn’t on the scoresheet, Barella earned the Man of the Match honors for his scintillating display.

The 26-year-old was influential as ever in the midfield battle, and also struck the woodwork with a superb volley.

“It was a great display. We hadn’t had this much fun in a long time,” said the Sardinian in his post-match interview with Mediaset via FcInterNews.

“We showed off our qualities. Lazio are difficult opponents, but today, all of us proved our worth. Everyone wanted to do well, everyone wanted the ball.

“We worked so hard to get to this level. There’s still a long way to go, we want to win this Cup and do well in the league.”

The Italy international admitted that he would have loved to score his chance, but insists on his satisfaction with his teammates finding the back of the net.

“I would have loved to get that one because it was a great play from the team.

“But if the others score, then I’m happy. I’m fine with assisting, When my teammates are on the scoresheet, the rest doesn’t matter.”

Inter have now booked a meeting with Napoli in the Super Cup final on Monday. Barella acknowledges the quality of his upcoming opponents despite their current struggles.

“Napoli are the reigning Italian champions. Their qualities persist even if difficult moments can ensue throughout the campaign.”
