Inter Milan are confident that they will seal a big contract extension of their captain Lautaro Martinez, sooner or later.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, call a new deal for the Argentine “a question of when, not if.”
Finalizing a contract extension with Martinez is one of Inter’s priorities for the start of 2024.
The Nerazzurri had reportedly even been hoping to do so during the month of January.
However, the first month of the year came and went without Martinez putting pen to paper on an extension.
This has perhaps led to a bit of doubt and speculation about the status of talks between the parties.
And then, Martinez’s agent made recent comments about the negotiations. He made clear that there is no agreement yet, and hinted that the Nerazzurri must raise their offer to convince Martinez.
Inter Confident About Lautaro Martinez Extension – “Question Of When Not If”
Inter will certainly want to wrap up negotiations with Martinez and his representatives sooner or later.
At the moment, the 26-year-old is under contract until the end of June 2026.
But tying their captain down on a new long-term deal – until the end of June 2028 – would be a priority for the Nerazzurri considering Martinez would certainly have suitors if there was any hint he’s available.
However, the Gazzetta make sure to temper the rumours and speculation.
According to the newspaper, the mood has never changed behind the scenes.
There has long been a kind of informal agreement between the parties.
Martinez is not thinking about leaving. The Argentine is determined to stay at a club where he is content, and inherited the captain’s armband in the summer.
At the moment, the focus remains on the pitch.
Inter play six matches in the month of February, starting with this evening’s potential Serie A title-decider against Juventus.
There will also be the resumption of the Champions League against Atletico Madrid.
So Inter will not be keen to distract from the pitch unduly. Nor will Martinez.
But in any event, Inter’s confidence that a new deal for Martinez is only a matter of time has never diminished.
