The Mayor of Milano is still hoping that Inter Milan could stay at the San Siro, but the Nerazzurri are firmly set on another path in Rozzano.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
The futures of Inter, AC Milan, and the San Siro are becoming clearer virtually by the day.
After years of stalls and roadblocks in the plans by the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri to replace the San Siro, the two clubs have now been reorienting themselves in other directions.
It is Milan who have been going in another direction more aggressively.
The Rossoneri were the first of the two teams to lose patience. They started pursuing plans in the San Donato area.
And yesterday Milan took a big step towards making those plans a reality. They purchased the land on which they intend to build a new stadium,
It is now clear – the Rossoneri will build a new stadium in San Donato. And they will do so on their own, without Inter.
Milano Mayor Still Hopes Inter Could Stay In San Siro – But Rozzano Now The Priority
That still leaves two questions. Firstly, what Inter will decide, and secondly what comes of the San Siro.
As far as the fate of the San Siro, there will be no demolition.
After Inter and Milan had spent years trying to secure approval to tear down the iconic stadium and construct a more modern stadium, they faced the final, fatal bureaucratic hurdle of an injunction against doing so due to cultural and historic reasons.
So the city of Milano will not be doing so either.
The San Siro will be revamped. But not demolished altogether.
That could mean that the iconic stadium becomes a venue for concerts, and for the Italian national team.
But Milano Mayor Beppe Sala is still holding out some hope that Inter could decide to stay in the San Siro on their own.
However, according to the Gazzetta, there is no question that Inter are prioritizing Rozzano plans.
The Nerazzurri are not as far along there as their city rivals are in San Donato.
But Inter have also been moving along at a brisk pace in recent months. They have already formally submitted plans in the commune.
So it is looking more and more like both Inter and Milan will move out of the San Siro to stadiums of their own, leaving the city of Milano deciding what to do with the stadium.
