Legendary Italian manager Fabio Capello felt Inter Milan should have earned a bigger result in the first-leg clash against Atletico Madrid.

The Nerazzurri hosted the Colchoneros last Tuesday at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in the Champions League Round of 16.

Simone Inzaghi’s men had the bulk of the chances. However, they had to wait until the 79th minute to break the deadlock Marko Arnautovic.

The Austrian was himself guilty of squandering several glorious opportunities after replacing the injured Marcus Thuram at the break.

The Serie A leaders will head to the Spanish capital on March 13th with a slim advantage.

However, Capello laments the missed chances which could return to haunt the Italians in the second leg.

“Inter said they are going to play in Madrid as if the scoreline was 0-0,” said the former AC Milan and Real Madrid manager during his appearance on Sky Sport Italia via FcInterNews.

“I say that with five clear scoring opportunities as those they had in the first leg, scoring just one goal means you didn’t take full advantage of the numerous chances.”

Nevertheless, Capello praises Inzaghi’s midfield unit of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella.

The 77-year-old highlights their essential role in the defensive phase, while identifying the Sardinian star as the man of the match against Atletico.

“Inter’s midfielders act as filters in defense and this allows the team to reposition itself.

“Whenever they lose the ball, Mkhitaryan tracks back. The same goes for Calhanoglu and Barella who was the best player on the pitch.”

Inter’s next match is a Serie A away fixture against Lecce on Sunday evening at the Via del Mare Stadium.
