The mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala reveals a two-phase plan to renovate San Siro amidst the 2026 Olympic Games.

While Inter Milan and AC Milan have each embarked on a separate stadium project, the municipality of Milan is still eager to keep the two clubs within the city walls.

Therefore, Sala entrusted WeBuild to come out with a project to renovate the San Siro.

The company should present the project in June, and he’ll be hoping for a vote of approval. from the Nerazzurri and Rossoneri.

However, the Winter Olympic Games could represent another hurdle for Sala’s plans. The San Siro will host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Olympics in 2026.

Nevertheless, the mayor believes he can overcome the issue with a two-phase plan, beginning with the works that don’t hamper the ceremony.

“It is clear that there are some works that would not impact the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Olympics,” noted Sala during the presentation of the Milan master plan Santa Giulia via FcInterNews.

“Therefore, we shouldn’t waste time in this regard. I believe dividing the work into two phases could be the solution.”

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala Remains Coy On San Siro Renovation Project While Awaiting June

Moreover, Sala averted from expressing optimism or pessimism about the renovation project. He would rather wait for the two clubs’ final answer in June.

“I heard and appreciate [Milan owner] Gerry Cardinale’s words of pragmatism. The positive thing is that Inter and Milan sent their requests to Webuild. who will take them into consideration.

“So I am suspending optimism or pessimism while awaiting June.

“In the meantime, I’ll continue to ensure the deadlines are respected.

“It is important that by June we can constitute a credible alternative to the San Donato and Rozzano projects.”
