Former Inter Milan player Benoit Cauet feels Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee still has many things to prove before earning a move to the Nerazzurri or any other top club for that matter.

The 22-year-old Dutchman has been one of the main revelations of the Serie A campaign. The Dutchman joined the Rossoblu in 2022, completing a move from Bayern Munich. He acted as Marko Arnautovic’s understudy in his first campaign at the Renato Dall’Ara,

But with the Austrian veteran completing a summer move to Inter, Bologna put their trust in Zirkzee while upgrading his role.

This turned out to be quite a maneuver from the Emilians. The young striker has been sensational this term, leading the club’s charge towards an unlikely Champions League bid.

After beating AS Roma over the weekend and cementing their fourth place in the table, Bologna are now the odds-on favorites to book their place in UCL next term according to all accounts, including, especially with Serie A gaining an extra spot in the European competition.

But despite Zirkzee’s breakthrough campaign, Cauet still has his doubts. Therefore, he believes the striker must replicate his exploits at least for another season to confirm himself as a top-notch player.

“In my opinion, he still has to develop. One season is not enough to demonstrate that he has the required quality,” said the Frenchman in his interview with Giarnale Radio via FcInterNews.

“He must do more, even if he has shown that he is an excellent player.”

Moreover, the retired midfielder urges Inter to maintain their core while only making the necessary upgrades.

“Inter have already worked well on their midfield department and this is their main strength. We must not disrupt this group that works well together. We just need to insert the right players not to increase, but to maintain what is already there.

“Davide Frattesi is a starter and if he plays, he can deliver. He can even improve on this season, guaranteeing many goals.”

Cauet also praised the Nerazzurri for their pleasant brand of football.

“Inter have a very entertaining way of playing. You rarely see this type of football in Italy. The management also deserves the credit.

“You have to be very good at replacing the important players who leave the club. It’s also great to see how the new players have integrated and how they have become crucial to winning this title.”
