Christian Abbiati feels his former employers AC Milan had a decent campaign but were simply overshadowed by the the rampant Inter Milan.
The Nerazzurri won the Serie A title by a landslide. They mathematically secured their triumph with five rounds to spare to unlock the club’s second golden star.
Ironically, the Beneamata did so by beating their arch-rivals Milan in a very special edition of the Derby della Madonnina.
The 2-1 victory saw Simone Inzaghi’s men celebrate their triumph in front of their fallen crosstown foes. The stars had truly lined up for the Nerazzurri on that magical night at San Siro. It was almost like hitting the jackpot while playing game baccarat online.
Inter had also beaten the Rossoneri by a shocking 5-1 result earlier in the campaign. That September rooting foretold how the Scudetto race was going to unfold.
In fact, Milan never truly cemented themselves as a genuine contender for their cousins. Juventus was the only team that managed to keep pace with Inter, at least until their mid-season collapse in February that followed the Derby d’Italia defeat.
Afterwards, the Nerazzurri marched almost contested towards their 20th Serie A title.
Nevertheless, Abiatti still feels that Stefano Pioli produced the goods this season with Milan who finished second in the league.
The Rossoneri have already announced the departure of the former Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio boss following what many have perceived as an underwhelming campaign.
Christian Abbiati Explains How Inter Overshadowed Milan This Season
However, the former keeper argues that Milan were simply in the shadows of their radiating neighbors.
“In my opinion, Pioli did well because he finished second by scoring a large point tally,” said the former Milan and Juventus goalkeeper in his interview with Sky Sport Italia via FcInterNews.
“With Inter’s victory, the good campaign that Milan enjoyed was somewhat erased.”
But regardless of Abbati’s opinion, the Milan management decided to move forward, parting ways with Pioli.
The departing manager received an emotional farewell on Saturday night following the 3-3 draw with Salernitana. Therefore, the Diavolo are now on the hunt for a new tactician.
On the contrary, Inter will stick with Inzaghi who enjoyed the most prosperous campaign of his managerial career thus far.
The 48-year-old finally earned his maiden Scudetto medal after missing out on the honor in the previous two campaigns.
The Nerazzurri are now looking to renew the manager’s contract which will expire in 2025.
