Oaktree are considering appointing current CEO for Sport Beppe Marotta as the new Inter Milan President.

This according to a report by Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio. Marotta would succeed Steven Zhang who resigned as President after Suning lost control of the club to Oaktree.

Suning appointed Marotta as the club’s CEO for Sport in December 2018. He arrived at Inter after having a similar role at Juventus between May 2010 and October 2018.

Since then Marotta has been the architect behind the current Inter Milan cycle.

A cycle which has to date delivered seven trophies as well as a spot in the Europa League and Champions League finals respectively.

On June 6th 2016, Chinese Suning Holding Group, bought Inter Milan. Suning bought out former President Massimo Moratti‘s shares as well as a majority of Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir.

As of May 22, 2024, funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management have taken over ownership of FC Internazionale Milano or Inter Milan.

In May 2021 Oaktree provided rescue capital to the club’s holding company to stabilize its economic situation.

Thus ensuring its continued operations, including meeting obligations to players and staff.

This transfer of ownership comes after Oaktree’s three-year loan to Inter Milan’s holding companies matured on May 21, 2024.

The outstanding balance of approximately €395m was not repaid.

Over the three years since Oaktree’s intervention, Inter Milan has achieved notable successes.

These include winning their eighth and ninth Coppa Italia as well as securing their sixth, seventh, and eighth Supercoppa titles,

The most important trophy was clinching their 20th Scudetto title. This meant along a second historic second star.

Inter also reached the UEFA Champions League final for the first time since 2010.

All of this under the leadership of Beppe Marotta. Now, Marotta could be the club’s next president.

Tomorrow during an extra meeting of the club’s shareholders, a new club President will be appointed.
