Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer is confident he’ll maintain his starting berth despite the imminent arrival of Josep Martinez.

The 35-year-old joined the Nerazzurri last summer as a replacement for Andre Onana who completed a big-money switch to Manchester United.

The former Bayern Munich man proved to be an excellent choice thanks to his consistency and reliability between the sticks.

Last season, the Swiss cemented himself as the club’s ultimate first choice, with Emil Audero acting as his understudy. The latter only managed to collect rare appearances throughout the course of the season.

The Italian champions have decided against keeping Audero on a permanent basis, so he’ll return to his parent club Sampdoria.

Curiously, his replacement will also come from the Ligurian City, as the Nerazzurri found an agreement with Genoa over Martinez’s transfer.

The 26-year-old will soon undergo his medical test before making his move official next week.

Nevertheless, Sommer remains unfazed by the change in personnel.

Yann Sommer Expects To Remain Inter Milan’s First Choice Following The Arrival Of Josep Martinez

The veteran goalkeeper spoke to Italian media ahead of Switzerland’s clash against Italy in the Euro 2024 Round of 16.

Sommer is well aware that Martinez will join the club, but insists that he remains Inter’s ultimate Number One.

“It’s normal that Inter are buying a new goalkeeper,” said the former FC Basel man in his pre-match interview with Rai Sport via FcInter1908.

“Last season, we had Audero, a great goalkeeper and a good guy, but he’s leaving the club and we need a new shot-stopper that I can work with,

“Yes, I’ll remain the club’s first choice,”

Switzerland secured their place in the quarter-finals with a surprisingly comfortable 2-0 over defending champions Italy.

For his part, Sommer was hardly troubled as he managed to register his first clean sheet of the tournament.
