Inter Milan could prefer a move for Ricardo Rodriguez on a free transfer rather than Mario Hermoso this summer.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, note that the Swiss international’s willingness to sign a one-year deal could be crucial.

Inter are currently considering their options as far as a signing in defense.

The Nerazzurri are targeting a player who can play on the left of a back three.

Inter Sporting Director Piero Ausilio admitted that this is the club’s strategy.

The reason for this is that the Nerazzurri want to use Carlos Augusto exclusively as a wingback to cover for the injury to Tajon Buchanan.

Therefore, Inter are looking at available players who can play on the left of a back three.

Inter Could Prefer Short-Term Ricardo Rodriguez Signing Over Mario Hermoso

Swiss international Rodriguez and Spaniard Hermoso are both certainly capable of playing on the left of a back three.

That is where the pair played for much of the past few seasons at Torino and Atletico Madrid respectively.

And both Rodriguez and Hermoso are certainly available.

Both of the two left-footed defenders are currently out of contract. Therefore, they represent potential free transfer opportunities.

Inter’s penchant for free transfer signings is hardly a secret.

But the deals to sign the two defenders would be quite different.

Even without a transfer fee, Hermoso’s wage demands would be high. And the Spaniard would want at least a three-year contract.

Therefore, Inter would be committing a fair bit financially to bringing the former Espanyol defender in.

On the other hand, Rodriguez would be willing to sign a one-year deal.

That would be more in line with Inter’s idea for a defensive signing. They want to bring in a player to bolster the defensive depth in the short term.

But a longer-term commitment is not really on the agenda for the Nerazzurri.
