Spanish defender Mario Hermoso is reportedly keen to join Inter Milan, even if it means decreasing his salary requests.

The 29-year-old was a stalwart for Atletico Madrid over the past five years. He cemented himself as a key figure in Diego Simeone’s backline.

However, the Spaniard opted for a new experience, so he refused to sign an extension with the Colchoneros.

Hermoso is now one of the most interesting names on the free-agent market. News reports have been linking him with a move to Serie A, with Napoli and Inter emerging as the most likely two destinations.

But according to Il Corriere dello Sport via FcInterNews, the  Madrid native wants to join the Nerazzurri.

The centre-back is even willing to lower his wage demands from 5 million euros per year to 3.5M in addition to bonuses.

The Italian champions have been on the lookout for a new left-footed defender, so Hermoso fits the bill in this regard.

However, the club’s new owners Oaktree Capital have instructed the management to pursue younger profiles.

At the age of 29, Hermoso isn’t exactly an “old” player, but an experienced defender at the peak of his powers.

But while Inter appreciates the lower wage demands, the length of the contract requested by the player remains an issue. The defender is reportedly asking for a three-year deal.

So we shall see if the two parties will make a breakthrough in their talks over the next few days.

Hermoso started his career at Real Madrid but went on to make a name for himself at Espanyol.

This earned him a return to the Spanish capital, but this time through the gates of Atletico in the summer of 2019.

The left-footed defender also has five international caps with the senior Spanish national team.
