Legendary former Nerazzurri captain Beppe Bergomi feels that a repeat of the Serie A title is “not a guarantee” for Inter Milan next season.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInterNews, Bergomi gave his thoughts on the upcoming title race.

There is no doubt that Inter will go into next season as the favourites to win the Serie A title.

The reason is not hard to see. The Nerazzurri didn’t just win last season’s title – they did so in highly dominant fashion.

Moreover, Inter have kept the team that won that title together. And even strengthened it, with the arrivals of players like Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zielinski.

Therefore, the expectation will be that Inter can reproduce their form from last season.

Even though rivals like Juventus, AC Milan, and Napoli have taken steps to improve this summer transfer window, Inter will start out as favourites.

Moreover, that is not necessarily just an impression from outside.

Inside Inter, there will undoubtedly be a sense that they are the favourites. And perhaps also the pressure to live up to that expectation.

Beppe Bergomi: “No Guarantee Of Inter Serie A Title Repeat”

One thing that Inter cannot do, however, is become complacent or rest on their laurels.

Former Inter defender Bergomi gave the view that “Winning the Scudetto is not an absolute guarantee.”

“These are no longer the days where the same team dominates for years on end, like Juventus did,” he said.

Bergomi warned Inter, “Don’t let up. The other teams are chasing your tail.”

“In order not to let up, solidity at the back will be particularly important,” he anticipated.

“First and foremost, the defense has to maintain something that they perfected last season. They went from being one of the team that struggled the most with counterattacks, to almost perfect concentration.”

“They were able to prevent counters and win the ball perfect timing,” Bergomi said.

“And then that also supported the team’s attacking approach.”
