A legal case against Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson in Iceland could be a major obstacle to Inter Milan signing the 26-year-old.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

By all accounts, Gudmundsson is Inter’s biggest target in attack this summer.

The former AZ Alkmaar forward is a player the Nerazzurri have identified as having the right profile to complete their attack next season.

Not just because Gudmundsson scored fourteen goals and assisted a further seven last season for Genoa.

Inter also feel that the 26-year-old’s versatility and dribbling ability would give their attack something it doesn’t already have.

Signing Gudmundsson would be tough for Inter without selling Joaquin Correa and Marko Arnautovic.

But according to the Gazzetta, the real difficulty could be something else entirely.

Legal Case The Biggest Obstacle For Inter Signing Albert Gudmundsson

At present, there is an open legal case against Gudmundsson for sexual assault in his home country Iceland.

The legal case was first opened in August of 2023.

Gudmundsson was not able to participate in training or matches with the Icelandic international team during the investigation.

Then, the federal prosecutor’s office closed the case earlier this year. That meant that Gudmundsson was allowed to play in EURO 2024 qualifiers with Iceland in the spring.

However, the prosecutor’s office in Iceland reopened the case on appeal from Gudmundsson’s accuser, based on the testimony of a new witness.

At the moment, the outcome of the case remains pending.

But what is clear is that Gudmundsson does risk jail time. The minimum sentence for sexual assault in Iceland is one year in prison.

Undoubtedly, were Gudmundsson to receive a prison sentence it would be a massive blow to his employing club.

Therefore, the Gazzetta report, Inter may decide to steer clear given the uncertainty around the outcome of Gudmundsson’s case.
