Lautaro Martinez has become the second ever Inter Milan player to be the top scorer at a Copa America.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that the Brazilian Adriano had previously done so in 2004.

Inter captain Martinez was the top scorer at the Copa America this summer.

The 26-year-old found the back of the net five times in six matches in total.

Martinez did not even start the majority of Argentina’s matches at the tournament. He played from the first whistle in two matches, whilst Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez led the line from the start in four.

But that certainly did not prevent Martinez from having his say.

The Inter captain did not just score goals than any other player at the tournament. His goals also had a tendency to be decisive.

Martinez scored late in two 1-0 victories.

First, the Nerazzurri captain found the back of the net in the last couple minutes of a group stage victory over Chile.

And even more important was the goal Martinez scored in the final.

The 26-year-old came off the bench in the final against Colombia on Sunday evening.

And Martinez was the player who stuck the ball in the back of the net in extra time to see Argentina win the Copa America for the second time in a row.

Lautaro Martinez The Second Inter Player To Be Copa America Top Scorer

Martinez is not the first Inter player to be the top scorer in a Copa America, though.

The previous one had been legendary former Nerazzurri striker Adriano.

Adriano had joined Inter from Parma in January of 2004.

And that summer, the Brazilian would go on to have a starring role for his country at the Copa America.

That summer, Adriano was a key man for the Selecao at the Copa America.

The Inter striker scored a total of seven goals at the tournament.

This included a very dramatic one in the final against Argentina.

Brazil took the match to a shootout with a final scoreline of 2-2. But this was only thanks to a 93rd minute goal from Adriano.

Furthermore, the Inter striker also took Brazil’s first penalty in the shootout via which they won the trophy.
