The contacts are still ongoing between Inter Milan and the representatives of wingback Denzel Dumfries in contract extension talks.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper report that there is optimism that the Dutchman will sign a new deal early next month.
Dumfries is at a bit of a crossroads at Inter this summer.
The Dutchman is currently under contract with the Nerazzurri until the end of next June. He is still on the same four-year deal that he signed when he joined from PSV in 2021.
Therefore, Inter’s intentions are clear.
The Nerazzurri want to extend Dumfries’s deal. Otherwise, they would aim to sell him this summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in twelve months’ time.
Reportedly, Premier League side Aston Villa are targeting the Dutchman.
However, if Dumfries does accept a contract extension offer from Inter, then he will not be on the market this summer.
Contacts Ongoing Between Inter & Denzel Dumfries In Contract Talks
At the moment, Dumfries is on vacation following the Euros. The Dutchman reached the semifinals of that tournament with his national team.
But that does not mean that the contract extension talks are entirely on hold.
Inter, according to Tuttosport, are still in close contact with Dumfries’s representatives.
The Nerazzurri want to set things up so that, when the 28-year-old is back, they can very quickly wrap up the negotiations and have him put pen to paper on a new deal.
Dumfries will return from his holidays in early August. The third of next month should see him back in Milan.
And Inter are optimistic that Dumfries will sign his new deal when he is back.
This can put to rest uncertainty about the former PSV wingback’s future. That is hardly something Inter would want hanging over the preseason preparations.
Inter are offering Dumfries a deal worth €4 million net per season. That would be right around what Federico Dimarco earns, ideal to not cause any friction in the dressing room.
