Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino insists there aren’t many goalkeepers around like Inter Milan new signing Josep Martinez.

The 26-year-old spent two campaigns at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, developing his game under the guidance of the 2006 World Cup winner.

The Spaniard helped his side earn promotion to the top flight in his maiden campaign in Italian football.

Last campaign, he proved his worth in Serie A, earning himself the admiration of the Nerazzurri.

Inter eventually snatched his services on a permanent deal worth 13 million euros in addition to bonuses.

Martinez will initially act as an understudy for the club’s Number One Yann Sommer while hoping to inherit the starting gloves at some point in the future.

For his part. Gilardino suggests that Genoa could struggle to replace the Barcelona youth product due to his elusive characteristics.

“When I took over the first team, I had two important goalkeepers: Semper and Josep. I gave continuity to Martinez and we built what everyone saw,” said the Genoa manager in his interview with Sky Sport Italia via FcInter1908.

“We tried to create certain game developments. Goalkeepers with Josep’s characteristics are not easy to find.

“We are looking for a reliable goalkeeper, who knows how to make saves, but also play with his feet.”

Moreover, Gilardino discussed Inter Milan target Albert Gudmundsson. The former Milan striker says he’s isn’t surprised to see the Icelandic star joining his team’s pre-season amidst exit talks.

“I expected Gudmundsson to be here, because the club was clear with me.

“Today he is a Genoa player. He’s training well, proving to be a great professional.

“The other night I asked him if he was happy to be here, and said he’s very pleased.

“We will see how things develop in the next few weeks, but for now, we are holding on to Albert as we believe in him.”
