Inter Milan are still considering signing Ricardo Rodriguez on a free transfer as a possible solution to bolster their defense.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

Inter are looking to sign a defender this summer.

The Nerazzurri’s aim is to sign a player who can deputize for Alessandro Bastoni on the left side of the back three.

That will allow Carlos Augusto to exclusively play at wingback. Last season, the versatile Brazilian played significant minutes in defense, but he will be needed to cover for the injured Tajon Buchanan.

Inter had been close to signing Hellas Verona defender Juan Cabal.

However, the Colombian instead went to Juventus.

Therefore, Inter are now back at square one in their search for a defensive signing.

Inter Still Considering Ricardo Rodriguez A Defensive Target

Reportedly, the focus of Inter’s search would be a young defender.

The likes of Zenit St. Petersburg’s Robert Renan, Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior, and Genoa’s Johan Vazquez are all reportedly on the Nerazzurri’s radar.

Like Cabal, all three of that trio are age 25 and under.

That would entail signing a defender who has room to grow, as well as prospective resale value.

Reportedly, that is the strategy that Inter owners Oaktree Capital prefer.

However, that does not necessarily mean that Inter will not consider the possibility of bringing in a more experienced defender as a short-term option.

Atletico Madrid’s Mario Hermoso is a player who has been persistently linked in this respect.

And Sky report that Inter are still considering former AC Milan and Wolfsburg defender Rodriguez.

The 31-year-old is available as a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Torino.

Rodriguez has played as a full-back, and over the past few years has principally played on the left of a back three for the Granata and for Switzerland.

That means that Rodriguez would slot in to Inter’s back three fairly seamlessly.

Moreover, Rodriguez would not constitute a big investment. Reportedly, the Swiss would be willing to accept just a one-year contract offer.

Therefore, Sky reports, Inter are still considering the former Torino defender as a possible short-term option.
