Inter Milan are still in talks to sign Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson despite firm denials from President Beppe Marotta.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

For months, Inter’s biggest target in attack has looked to be Genoa forward Gudmundsson.

The links to the 26-year-old former AZ Alkmaar forward have stretched back to the spring.

Reports indicate that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi sees Gudmundsson as exactly the profile that the team need to take their attack to the next level.

This is not just because the Icelandic international scored fourteen goals and assisted a further seven for Genoa last season.

Inter and Inzaghi also see Gudmundsson as having a profile that would be unique among the Nerazzurri’s forward options.

Inter do not have a player with Gudmundsson’s proficiency dribbling in tight spaces in their squad at the moment.

Moreover, the 26-year-old is versatile enough to play anywhere from central midfield to second striker, That was on full display for Genoa last season.

Inter Still In Talks For Albert Gudmundsson Despite Marotta Denials

It is not as though there would not be obstacles in Inter’s chase of Gudmundsson, however.

Firstly, there is the matter of the price tag.

By all accounts, Genoa want no less than 30 million if they’re to sell the Icelander.

Inter could aim to work out a deal structured around an initial paid loan. That would be one way to bring the transfer within reach.

But the fact that the Nerazzurri already have four senior forwards – all on fairly high wages – would still make this difficult.

Reports indicate that a sale of Marko Arnautovic may be necessary if Inter are to sign Gudmundsson.

At the bare minimum, Inter certainly must offload Joaquin Correa if they’re to sign the Icelander.

Then, there is the matter of an ongoing legal case for sexual assault in Gudmundsson’s native Iceland. The 26-year-old risks a prison sentence as things stand.

This could pose a further complication for Inter.

In any event, yesterday Inter President Beppe Marotta made clear that he does not see Gudmundsson as “right for” Inter this summer.

The Nerazzurri President denied that there are negotiations to sign the Icelandic international.

However, according to the Corriere, the negotiations are in fact ongoing.

Inter and the Grifone will continue to discuss Gudmundsson over the coming days.

The Corriere report that Inter are still looking to see whether a deal for Gudmundsson is feasible this summer.
