Inter Milan must stick to a tight budget in their search for a defender, as they pursue Robert Renan, Jakub Kiwior, and Johan Vazquez.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

One thing that looks clear is that Inter will sign a defender this summer.

The Nerazzurri have a clear profile in mind. They want a player who can back up Alessandro Bastoni on the left of the back three.

Last season, Carlos Augusto had regularly played in that role.

However, the former Monza defender will have to play exclusively at wingback for at least the first few months of next season.

This will be to cover for Tajon Buchanan, who is slowly recovering from a serious leg break.

Inter had looked on the verge of signing Juan Cabal from Hellas Verona for the role. However, Juventus snatched the Colombian from under their noses.

Back to square one, Inter have identified a few targets.

Inter On A Tight Budget As Renan, Kiwior & Vazquez On Defensive Shortlist

Inter owners Oaktree Capital have made their own preference clear.

The Nerazzurri owners want to invest in a younger defender similar in age to Cabal rather than making a short-term signing of a more experienced player.

However, the budget for signing a defender is not terribly high.

The Corriere report that Oaktree do not want to spend more than 10 million this summer. THat is what Inter had been prepared to spend on Cabal.

Inter are considering Zenit St. Petersburg’s Robert Renan as a target. However, Zenit want 20 million for the Brazilian – his release clause is 26 million.

Zenit are not currently open to an initial loan. But Inter could wait to try and negotiate one.

It’s a similar story with Arsenal defender Kiwior.

The former Spezia defender would be a feasible target for Inter if he pushes for Arsenal to sanction a loan deal with a purchase option.

However, the outright signing of Kiwior this summer would be outside of Inter’s budget.

Lastly, there is also Genoa and Mexico defender Vazquez.

Inter will wait and see whether the Grifone would open up to loaning the 25-year-old this summer with a possible purchase option or obligation.
