Former Parma defender Antonio Bennarivo feels that Inter Milan are still the “big favourites” to win the Serie A title.
The former defender spoke to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInterNews.
Last season, Inter did not just win the Serie A title. They did so in dominant fashion.
Nearly twenty points separated the Nerazzurri from city rivals AC Milan – who were in second place – in the league table at the end of the season.
This was a testament to Inter’s relentless consistency.
Both in attack and in defense, the Nerazzurri had an immaculate record.
Therefore, it is perhaps only inevitable that Inter head into the upcoming season as the team with the highest expectations when it comes to getting their hands on the Serie A title again.
However, this summer, many of Inter’s rivals have been doing extensive work in the transfer window.
Not just last season’s runners-up Milan. Juventus, third in last season’s table, have also changed coaches and made a raft of big signings.
And Napoli have responded to last campaign’s shocking fall from first to tenth in the table by bringing in former Inter, Juventus, and Chelsea coach Antonio Conte and reinforcing the squad.
Bennarivo: “Inter Milan Still The Big Favourites To Win Serie A Title”
Looking ahead to next season, former Parma defender Bennarivo said that “I hope it’ll be more competitive than last one.”
“Inter dominated. They immediately put a massive gap from the rest of the back as soon as winter ended.”
“On the other hand, I like a tighter title race. A real neck-and-neck sprint.”
Bennarivo went on that “Inter are still the big favourites.”
“There’s no point in hiding that.”
“They’ve kept the team that won the Scudetto together, and brought in players with quality and experience in Zielinski and Taremi.”
“Furthermore, there’s a continuity to the project with the same coach,” Bennarivo noted. “Simone Inzaghi is proving to be a top coach.”
“I expect a great run from them in the Champions League as well,” he added.
