Panathanaikos will not sell defender Georgis Vagiannidis to Botafogo for a cut-price fee due to Inter Milan having a significant sell-on clause.

This according to Greek football journalist Aris Antonopoulous. He reports in a tweet that the Athens club will not drop the asking price for the 22-year-old to 1 million, as they would owe 40% of that to Inter.

Young Greek right-back Vagiannidis spent a total of one year as an Inter player.

The defender joined the Nerazzurri in the summer of 2021. He joined from Greek Super League side Panathanaikos.

The player himself stated that the likes of Manchester City and Monaco had also chased him. But he decided upon a move to Inter instead.

Vagiannidis spent the 2020-21 season on loan with Sint-Truiden in Belgium. However, it was not a successful loan spell for the Greek.

Vagiannidis made just one appearance for Sint-Truiden across the entire 2020-21 campaign. This came in a cup match.

Therefore, it was little surprise when Inter allowed the Greek to rejoin Panathanaikos.

Just twelve months after signing for the Nerazzurri on a free transfer, Vagiannidis made the return to his boyhood club on a free transfer.

Inter may not have sold Vagiannidis back to Panathanaikos for a fee.

However, the deal did include an agreement that the Nerazzurri would receive a percentage of resale on any future transfer if the Athens team were to sell the defender in the future.

The total resale percentage that Inter are entitled to for Vagiannidis is 40%.

Panathanaikos Won’t Sell Vagiannidis For Cut-Price Fee Due To 40% Inter Sell-On Clause

This summer, Vagiannidis looks set to leave Panathanaikos.

It is Brazilian club Botafogo who have moved to try and sign the Greek defender.

However, the question of the fee remains in question.

Early reports indicated that the fee for Vagiannidis could be as high as 6.5 million.

However, then reports dropped significantly, to around 1 million. Reportedly, Botafogo have aimed to use the fact that Vagiannidis’s contract with Panathanaikos runs out next June as leverage.

According to Greek football journalist Antonopoulous, though, Panathanaikos are not going to sell the 22-year-old for that little.

The reason is the sell-on fee that Inter are entitled to.

If Panathanaikos are to sell Vagiannidis for too low of a fee, then the fact that they will only receive 40% of it will mean they earn very little from the sale.

Therefore, the Athens club would see selling the defender for 1 million as pointless.

Antonopoulous reports that Panathanaikos have already rejected offers from Hoffenheim and Braga worth over 2 million for Vagiannidis. That would therefore be the benchmark.

But according to the Greek journalist, there is a strong sense that the sale to Botafogo will end up happening, at a price tag that both clubs can agree upon.
