Inter Milan could sign teenage defender Giovanni Leoni from Sampdoria by offering a player in addition to a cash fee.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They name Filip Stankovic and Alessandro Fontanarosa as possible counterparts in a deal.

Inter have been eyeing up a deal for Leoni this summer.

Despite still being just seventeen years of age, the Nerazzurri see the young Italian as capable of developing into a top-class defender at senior level over the next few years.

Therefore, Inter want to sign Leoni this summer. Then, likely loan him back to Sampdoria.

There have already been talks between the Nerazzurri and the Blucerchiati.

And in the next few weeks, Inter should hold another meeting with executives from the Ligurian club about Leoni.

But Inter are not going to push to get the transfer over the line in the next week or two.

Rather, the Nerazzurri’s priority is still very much signing a defender for the senior squad. They want to bring in a player who can back up Alessandro Bastoni.

However, Inter are still eyeing up a deal for Leoni. They want to get it done before the end of the transfer window.

Inter Could Sign Giovanni Leoni From Sampdoria For Player + Cash

Sampdoria signed Leoni for just 1.5 million this summer. They exercised a purchase option to make his loan from Padova last season into a permanent deal.

However, the Blucerchiati would now certainly be expecting a much higher fee to sell the teenage defender.

The fee would certainly be no less than 5 million.

And then there would be competition for Leoni’s signature.

Juventus and Torino are reportedly also keen from within Serie A.

And then the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Monaco have reportedly shown an interest in bringing the teenage defender to the Premier League and Ligue 1 respectively.

Them most significant competition may in fact come from Napoli however.

But Inter’s strategy could be to try and tempt Sampdoria with a player-plus-cash offer.

The Ligurians’ interest in bringing Filip Stankovic back after the goalkeeper was there on loan last season is no secret. Therefore the Serbian goalkeeper would be one possibility.

Alternatively, Inter could send a defender of their own to Sampdoria in the form of Alessandro Fontanarosa.
