Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is back in training for Inter Milan and preparing to ward off the newfound competition of Josep Martinez.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Sommer is one of a number of Inter players who are returning to training late due to international duty.

The 35-year-old was part of the Swiss international team that reached the quarterfinals of the Euros this summer.

Sommer started throughout the tournament, as he had done at the last Euros when Switzerland reached the same stage.

The Swiss eliminated Italy in the round of sixteen. However, they went out to England in the subsequent round on penalties, with Sommer failing to save a single spot kick.

Yann Sommer Back In Training For Inter – Ready To Fend Of Josep Martinez Competition

Sommer has rested up on his post-Euros vacation. Now he’s ready to start preparing for his second season at Inter.

The Swiss joined Inter last summer from Bayern Munich.

Over last season, Sommer was the clear first-choice starter at the Nerazzurri.

Whilst Emil Audero made a few appearances during the campaign, there was no doubt that he was the backup option and Sommer was the starter.

This time around things may be a little different though.

Audero is gone. And Inter have signed Josep Martinez from Genoa to replace him.

Martinez is not a player Inter just intend to be a deputy for Sommer.

Rather, the Nerazzurri’s plan is to have the Spaniard succeed the Swiss in the starting role in the long term.

That does not mean that Martinez will be the starter right away. Rather, Inter expect the former RB Leipzig keeper to take a season to settle in as the backup option.

The pressure will be off of Martinez, and the veteran Sommer can hold down the starting role.

But Sommer will know full well that Martinez is pushing to try and earn a starting spot right away.
