Inter Milan could decide to sign Ricardo Rodriguez on a free transfer late in the transfer window as a last-minute defensive reinforcement.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri will bide their time and could sign Rodriguez if more attractive targets don’t prove attainable.

Inter are still considering their strategy as far as signing a defender in the next few weeks.

What is clear is that the Nerazzurri want to bring in a defensive player before the end of the transfer window. And they have a particular profile in mind.

Inter want to sign a player who can play on the left of the back three.

This would allow Carlos Augusto – who frequently backed up Alessandro Bastoni last season – to play exclusively at wingback whilst Tajon Buchanan is on the sidelines following a broken leg.

Inter Milan Could Make Ricardo Rodriguez A Last-Minute Defensive Reinforcement

Inter are still not sure who they will be signing to bolster their defense, however.

The Nerazzurri had looked to be on the verge of a deal to sign Juan Cabal from Hellas Verona.

However, Juventus hijacked that deal and the Colombian joined the Bianconeri instead.

The likes of Zenit St. Petersburg’s Robert Renan and Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior are reportedly among the Nerazzurri’s target.

Meanwhile, links to Dinamo Zagreb’s Mauro Perkovic and Valencia’s Yarek Gasiorowski have also emerged in the last couple of days as Inter have cast a wide net in their search.

One major aspects that all of these targets have in common is their relatively young age.

Inter owners Oaktree Capital reportedly want to invest in a younger defender. They would prefer to go that route rather than seeking a low-cost and experienced player.

Therefore, Inter have reportedly been cool on the idea of signing former AC Milan and Wolfsburg defender Rodriguez. The 31-year-old is available on a free transfer after his contract with Torino expired.

But that does not mean that the Nerazzurri are not still keeping an eye on Rodriguez.

The advantage to moving for the Swiss international would be that he would not command a transfer fee, and Inter could wrap up a deal for him quickly if he is keen to join.

Therefore, Inter are not going to rush into a move for Rodriguez. They will consider other targets this month.

But if no other moves are to materialize, whether for financial or other reasons, Inter could consider signing Rodriguez later on in the transfer window.
