The future of Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries has taken a shocking twist after Manchester United showed interest in his services.

According to The Athletic, the Netherlands international has no intention of engaging in extension talks with the Nerazzurri until the end of the summer.

In contrast to the English publication’s report, Dumfries’ renewal looked like a mere formality until yesterday.

The 28-year-old returned to Giuseppe Meazza over the weekend after featuring at EURO 2024 with the Dutch national team.

Inter tried to seal the right-back’s extension immediately. Everything looked set after Dumfries agreed to a new four-year contract.

Simone Inzaghi’s men were ready to offer him a substantial annual salary worth €4 million per season to secure his services until 2028.

However, that’s all in doubt now as the ex-PSV Eindhoven star considers a sudden switch to the Premier League.

Formerly linked with Everton, Dumfries has caught the eye of Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag.

The player will not pen a new contract at Inter before he hears from his compatriot.

Dumfries has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Giuseppe Meazza.

Inter and the player’s camp have been in talks over an extension since the beginning of the summer.

However, the Dutchman’s international duties in June and early July had thrown a spanner in the works.

Inter had eagerly anticipated Dumfries’ return to Italy to finalize the agreement. And it was supposed to be a routine operation.

Instead, they could lose their star wingback in the coming weeks.

Ten Hag’s ambition to work with his fellow Dutch companions is well-documented.

That’s perhaps best evidenced by Man Utd’s transfer policy this summer.

Joshua Zirkzee swapped Bologna for Old Trafford in July, while Matthijs de Ligt could soon leave Bayern Munich for England.

Inter can only hope Dumfries won’t follow the same path.
