Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez has cut his vacation short to join the squad for pre-season preparations and make himself available for the Serie A opener.

According to Tuttosport, as reported by FCInterNews, Martinez featured in today’s training session for the first time since winning the 2024 Copa America title.

Martinez was crowned the top scorer in Argentina’s triumphant tournament in the United States last July. Therefore, the club granted him an extended rest period.

However, the 26-year-old is back in training, with Inter preparing for a curtain-raising league fixture against Genoa on August 17

While Simone Inzaghi welcomes his talismanic performer back to the fold, three first-team stars will likely miss out on the opening clash.

Summer arrival Mehdi Taremi has picked up a muscle injury following an impressive start to Inter’s off-season campaign.

In addition to the Algeria international, Piotr Zielinski and Marko Arnautovic are on the sidelines.

Like Taremi, Zielinski has joined Inter as a free agent. His contract at Napoli expired at the end of June, allowing the Nerazzurri to sign him on a free transfer.

The Poland international featured in pre-season friendlies against Lugano, Pergolettese, Las Palmas, and Pisa.

However, he’ll probably spend the next two to three weeks in the treatment room. That means he’ll be out for Inter’s trip to Genoa on August 17.

Inter hope they’ll have their new acquisition fit and ready for the round-two clash against Lecce at Giuseppe Meazza.

As for Arnautovic, he is out with an injury after inspiring Austria to knockout qualification at EURO 2024.

Arnautovic’s absence, compounded by Taremi’s fitness issue, narrows Inzaghi’s attacking options for the upcoming game against Genoa.

Marcus Thuram and Martinez will probably lead the line against Alberto Gilardino’s charges.
