There is no doubt that Yann Sommer will keep his starting place at Inter Milan for the start of the season after his display against Chelsea.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

This season, Inter made a big signing in goal by bringing in Josep Martinez from Genoa.

The Nerazzurri’s plan for Martinez is clear. The Spaniard has replaced Emil Audero as the backup for former Bayern Munich veteran Sommer this season – but will succeed the Swiss in the long term.

Sommer has only been at Inter for twelve months. But he is already 35 years of age.

Inter never signed Sommer to be the long-term keeper. Rather, they brought in the veteran keeper to be a safe pair of hands in the immediate aftermath of the sale of Andre Onana.

It is not as though Martinez will want to just wait around, though.

The 26-year-old will certainly be eager to start getting chances to play as soon as possible. And those will surely arrive during the long season.

Martinez could even have his eye on taking over the starting spot very soon.

There will undoubtedly be the threat of the Spaniard taking over putting pressure on Sommer to continually justify his starting place.

But against Chelsea, that is exactly what the 35-year-old did.

The Blues put Inter’s goal under plenty of pressure in the last friendly match of preseason.

And Sommer responded by producing a string of outstanding saves. In particular, the Swiss international’s stop on Chrisptopher Nkunku was a vintage example of his shot-stopping prowess.

There is no doubt that Sommer will be in the starting eleven in Inter’s first Serie A match of the season.

And for as long as the Swiss can perform as he did yesterday, he should just about keep Martinez at bay.
