Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi expects that he’ll use an attacking trio of Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, and Mehdi Taremi again.

Inzaghi spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, after his team’s 2-2 draw with Genoa in their Serie A opener. He expressed his satisfaction with his second half tactical switch that had seen three strikers on the pitch.

Inter had all three of Martinez, Thuram, and Taremi on the pitch at once for a period during the second half of this evening’s match at the Marassi.

It was Martinez and Thuram who started the match.

But when Nerazzurri coach Inzaghi decided to throw Taremi on, it was not for one of the two starting strikers.

Rather, the 48-year-old removed holding midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.

Therefore, the formation switched to something that looked more likea 3-4-3.

Inzaghi has gone with tactical tweaks of this nature in the past. He would occasionally have three forwards on the pitch at once when Inter were chasing matches last season.

But that was typically with Alexis Sanchez on the pitch. The Chilean could play more of an attacking midfield role.

This time around, it was three centre-forwards.

Inzaghi: “We’ll See Lautaro Thuram Taremi Trio More” This Season

There was no doubt that the fact that Inter were trying to score a goal to gain the lead influenced Inzaghi’s decision to remove a midfielder rather than one of the strikers to make way for Taremi.

And the coach’s gambit worked.

Inter did score a second goal to go ahead. Substitute Taremi was heavily involved with a deft flick, whilst Thuram was the scorer.

Inter were not able to see out the advantage, as Genoa equalized during stoppage time from the penalty spot.

However, the fact remains that the three-striker idea did get the goal that Inzaghi was seeking.

Asked if he expects to use the system again, Inzaghi replied “Yes, absolutely.”

“They fit well together,” the coach continued. “They looked good together on the pitch.”

“I’m sure we’ll see it again,” Inzaghi said of the strike trio. “Whether from the start, or with substitutes.”

As far as the draw against Genoa, the Inter coach admitted that “We knew it would be tough.”

“It’s never easy here,” he continued. Inter have not beaten Genoa at the Marassi since 2020.

“We conceded an unfortunate goal, and then we did well to find the equalizer. Then, in the second half we lost some focus due to tiredness.”
