Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is hoping to break his duck against Genoa in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A opener today.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Martinez is not a player who has ever struggled to find goals in Serie A.

The Argentine has been Inter’s top scorer in each of the past three seasons. He has found the back more than twenty times on each occasion.

Last season Martinez was the top scorer in all of Serie A.

Therefore, it is little surprise that Martinez has scored against the vast majority of opponents he’s faced with Inter in the Italian top flight, on at least one occasion.

But there is one team who the 26-year-old has yet to score against.

Martinez has faced Genoa as an opponent frequently.

Apart from the 2022-23 season, when the Grifone were in Serie B, Inter have taken the Ligurian club on twice per season ever since the Argentine joined in 2018.

But still, in all these opportunities, Martinez has never managed to score against them.

Inter Captain Lautaro Martinez Aims To Break Genoa Duck In Serie A Opener

Last season, Martinez had not even been part of Inter’s squad for their trip to the Marassi to face Genoa. He had been sidelined with a muscle injury.

And it had initially looked as though Martinez once again might miss an opportunity to score against Genoa.

The Inter captain was the final player to return to training this summer.

And considering that relatively late return, it had seemed as though Martinez wouldn’t even start in the first Serie A match of the season.

But injuries to Mehdi Taremi and Marko Arnautovic have left Inter shorthanded in attack.

Therefore, Martinez cut his vacation short a couple days. He has worked hard to be ready for this evening’s match.

If the Inter captain can finally score against this particular opposition tonight, it would certainly be an opportune time for the Nerazzurri.
