Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez was not able to break his duck against his personal “bogey team” Genoa in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A opener.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note the Argentine’s difficult evening at the Marassi.

Martinez is not a player who has ever struggled to find goals in Serie A.

The Argentine has been Inter’s top scorer in each of the past three seasons. He has found the back more than twenty times on each occasion.

Last season Martinez was the top scorer in all of Serie A.

Therefore, it is little surprise that Martinez has scored against the vast majority of opponents he’s faced with Inter in the Italian top flight, on at least one occasion.

But there is one team who the 26-year-old has yet to score against.

Martinez has faced Genoa as an opponent frequently.

Apart from the 2022-23 season, when the Grifone were in Serie B, Inter have taken the Ligurian club on twice per season ever since the Argentine joined in 2018.

But still, in all these opportunities, Martinez has never managed to score against them.

Lautaro Martinez Continues To Struggle Vs Genoa

Martinez was not helped in his efforts to finally score against the Grifone by the fact that he had a very short preseason.

The Argentine returned to training late after he had helped his national team win the Copa America.

And a lack of fitness was evident in Martinez’s performance.

The 26-year-old struggled to have much of an impact on the match. Particularly in the penalty area, he was not decisive.

Martinez has certainly shown that he’s a player who can brush nights like yesterday off.

The Inter captain is sure to be a regular source of goals for his team over the season to come.

But once again against Genoa, Martinez came up short.
