Matteo Darmian feels that Inter Milan were particularly motivated to beat Lecce as it meant their first Serie A win of the season.

The Italian international spoke to DAZN, via FCInterNews, after the 2-0 victory.

Inter are now out of the blocks in their Serie A title defense with a win.

The Nerazzurri had failed to take three points from their first match of the season. That had seen Genoa score a stoppage time equalizer in a wild 2-2 draw.

However, against Lecce, Inter made no mistake.

The Nerazzurri were in firm control, with a businesslike victory in front of their fans at the San Siro.

And at both ends of the pitch, Inter kept things polished.

The finishing was clinical enough, with Darmian the surprise scorer of Inter’s first goal at home this season and then Hakan Calhanoglu continuing his perfect record from the penalty spot for the second.

Meanwhile, defensively Inter held firm.

The Nerazzurri defended Lecce’s counters well. and there were no major errors at the back.

Yann Sommer was able to keep his first clean sheet of the campaign.

Matteo Darmian: “First Win Of The Season Meant A Lot” To Inter Vs Lecce

After the match, goalscorer Darmian admitted that “It meant a lot to us to go out and get our first win of the season.”

“In the opener we didn’t manage to,” he added. “And we were disappointed.”

“But today we redeemed ourselves,” the former Manchester United and Torino defender said.

“We brought home a great win in front of our fans. We’re happy.”

Meanwhile, Darmian also praised his teammate Calhanoglu, who sealed the win with yet another accurate spot kick.

“He’s a great shooter,” the 35-year-old said of Calhanoglu.

“We know how important he is to this team, and not just for his penalties,” Darmian added.

“He’s shown that. And he’s continuing to show it.”
