Inter Milan might have big plans in store for Josep Martinez, but Yann Sommer won’t relinquish his spot without a fight.

The Switzerland international joined the Nerazzurri last summer to replace Andre Onana. He immediately established himself as the ultimate first choice for Simone Inzaghi, while fellow newcomer Emil Audero settled for a backup role.

But while the 35-year-old didn’t face much competition last season, the situation could drastically change this time around.

Earlier this summer, Inter decided to invest circa 15 million euros in Martinez.

The 26-year-old is coming off an impressive Serie A debut campaign with Genoa, earning himself a move to San Siro.

This season, the plan is to confirm Sommer between spots while allowing the younger Spaniard to feature on some occasions.

However, the club expects Martinez to eventually take the torch from the veteran and cement himself as Inter’s Number One.

But according to Il Corriere dello Sport via FcInter1908, Sommer doesn’t intend to abdicate his role easily.

The Swiss custodian’s contract with the Italian champions will expire in June 2026, but he’s already eyeing a new contract.

Hence, the former Bayern Munich man is eager to deliver the goods this season and prove his worth to the club.

And beyond the contractual matter, Sommer is also hellbent on maintaining his regular spot and forcing Simone Inzaghi and the club to change their plan to promote Martinez next season.

This term, Sommer endured a complicated first outing in Genoa. His blunder allowed the Grifone to take the lead in a match that ended 2-2.

Nevertheless, the experienced shot-stopper managed to collect his maiden clean sheet of the season last weekend against Lecce.
