Inter Milan and AC Milan are reportedly inclining towards embarking on the San Siro renovation project.

The two rivals were initially planning to demolish the current ground and build a modern stadium in its place.

However, the authorities prevented the destruction of the stadium by imposing a restriction, citing its historical and cultural significance.

Inter and Milan then went in separate directions, laying plans to build their own grounds in Rozzano and San Donato respectively.

However, Milano mayor Giuseppe Sala has been on a missing to keep the two Serie A giants at San Siro.

He’s been working alongside construction company WeBuild on a renovation project that eventually passes the stadium’s ownership to the two clubs.

According to La Repubblica via FcInterNews, the two clubs are leaning towards accepting the project.

These plans will be less costly for the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri compared to building new stadiums. It should require around half a billion euros, split between the two sides.

Moreover, WeBuild promises to keep San Siro active during the renovation process between 2025 and 2029. Only some of the stands would be closed to the public.

Inter Milan & AC Milan Edging Towards Accepting San Siro Renovation Plans

However, this project will serve as a deadly blow to San Siro’s hosting rights of the 2027 Champions League final.

UEFA has already selected the Giuseppe Meazza as the hosting stadium for the event. However, the European football governing body won’t held such a prestigious event at a stadium that contains construction site.

Therefore, UEFA could decide to move the final to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The organization’s executive committee should ratify San Siro’s renunciation and make a final decision on the matter on September 24th.
