There was no refereeing controversy to speak of to put a blemish on Inter Milan’s 4-0 Serie A win over Atalanta yesterday.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They praise referee Matteo Marchetti for his smooth handling of proceedings.

Inter are heading into the international break with all the momentum.

The Nerazzurri have not just won the hardest match on paper of their first three of the season. They have done so by an eye-watering 4-0 scoreline.

Naturally, there were strong performances throughout the Inter team.

The Nerazzurri were fluid in possession, clinical in the final third, and intense out of possession.

And just as important as the four goals that Inter scored was their second clean sheet of the season.

No Refereeing Controversy In Inter Serie A Rout Vs Atalanta

Keeping a lid on yesterday’s match was never going to be the easiest task for referee Marchetti.

First of all, it was a match between two teams with expectations of at least finishing in the top four.

Yesterday’s match was in fact the first of this season between two teams that finished in the Champions League places last time around.

Therefore, there was always going to be a sense of tension about proceedings.

Moreover, the two coaches involved rarely hold back their feelings.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi spent much of the match looking edgy in his technical area. He occasionally boiled over and made his feelings known to the fourth official.

And the same was certainly true of Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

The veteran Gasperini certainly does not have a reputation for keeping his feelings close to his chest regarding refereeing.

But in spite of that atmosphere, there was not refereeing controversy.

In terms of cards and fouls, referee Marchetti was relatively lenient. He allowed play to flow. But that did not lead to any real recklessness from either sets of players.

And as far as penalties, there were no real appeals for either team.
